And Then The River Went Dry (Wolf Creed Pack, 1)

Chapter 2

The phone went sailing through his fingers to connect with the wall, smashing into tiny pieces and littering the carpet below. He could not contain the rage he felt for both he and his wolf wanted blood. The reputation of his pack was everything to him, for without its reputation there would be outsiders who thought they could disrupt the peace. People in his pack and even those who lived within or near his territory knew better than to cross him. Dealing with his enforcers was one thing, but being placed in his path of rage was a whole other thing. Not even the Alphas of the other packs dared to cross him. He was a fair man, but brutality was laced in his DNA. One had to have a strong will of iron and discipline to coexist with a dominant true alpha wolf, and balance was needed. Faced with rage and chaos, his human side always had to maintain level-headedness, but now he was not in that state of mind. No one dared to enter his office or disturb him as he tried to rein in his temper before he destroyed it. It would not be a good look for him to have his people see that their Alpha could not maintain control over his emotions. He also had to rein in his emotions before he went to deal with the four addicts who thought it was smart to physically assault a female, never mind it being on his land.

They looked down upon the use of drugs in the werewolf world but he did not band its use in his territory unless it was minors. It was frowned upon, for long-term use made the user develop psychosis, thus leading to humans discovering that they lived among creatures from bogeyman tales. It was not good for both the human side and the wolf in the long run but it was used in sacred rituals. Regular human drugs did not work on werewolves unless they multiplied it ten folds and they did not have the same effects as a high feeling. However, there was a special type of drug just for werewolves called mors interfectorem, which translates to death killer. It was made mostly from aconite roots or wolfsbane, as most called it, which could kill a werewolf if he was not careful. It was also very addictive. He inhaled deeply to center himself before he turned the knob of his office door and walked out. Opting to run to the cells a few miles in the restricted area of the forest on his land instead of driving a golf cart. He needed the extra exercise to help in burn off some of the tension in his limbs.

He arrived at the cells and was greeted by his Beta, Don, who looked even more pissed off than him.

"I'm sorry, Alpha, but I could not wait until you got here. I started working on the other three, but the one who kicked the girl, I left him for you."

"That's fine. He's the one I wanted," he said with a slight nod before heading into the interrogation room at the back of their holding cell building. In front of the open interrogation room door, Alpha Max told his Beta, "Contact their Alpha and explain the situation. I'll be sending his wolves slightly broken."

And that was it. Max closed the door on his Beta and turned to the violator. The one who had the balls to kick a she-wolf just because she rejected him. He rushed to the man who was huddled up, terrified, in the room's corner, whimpering. No doubt he heard the brutal beating that his three other friends received from Don. He grabbed him by his shirt collar and yanked him up, using his head to head-butt him right in his nose. Blood came spewing from the now broken organ and the young, drugged-up wolf panicked and started to thrash. Max tossed him across the room and he crashed against the concrete block wall before crumpling to the floor. The man had no chance. He was up against an alpha, who was clearly showing his restraint. Max leaped the distance between them and landed on his back, landing blows after punishing blows to the man's body as he whimpered and curled himself up into the fetus position, trying to protect his body. When the beating was done and Max's wolf was satisfied, even though he wanted to punish the young wolf himself. He turned to the man's foot.

"Which one did you use to kick her?".

The man was too stunned to speak. He wasn't sure why the alpha wanted that information, but his brain wasn't connecting with the question asked. He was too high on drugs and the pain was too unbearable to even think.

"ANSWER ME!" Max commanded in his alpha voice.

"The left, I think...I don't know," he quickly responded, crying through every word as the pain rocked his body.

Max grabbed his left foot, slightly lifting it off the floor, and stumped on it, breaking the bone. The screams of livid hell came tearing from the man's throat as all other pain dulled in comparison. The euphoric high he had, seemed to instantly vanish as he erupted in a chorus of wails, screams, and whimpers.

"Your alpha will no doubt send transportation for you," he said as he stood up with a sigh to his lips. "I don't have to tell you that if you ever come near my territory again, what would happen, right?"

"Yes, Alpha Maximillian."

"Good."

Carmeta got up with a pounding headache, her throat dry and a soreness in her lower back as the aftermath of a wild night came rushing back. She loved Maya dearly, but ever since they were kids, Maya's adventurous endeavors that involved her always ended in disasters. And the evidence of that disaster was presently her body. She literally had to drag herself out of bed and into the bathroom to brush her teeth and wash her face before heading to the kitchen. Putting on some coffee, she walked to the front of the house and looked out the window. There in the driveway was her car that sparkled in the sunlight and an enormous basket in the front seat. She headed out the front door and opened the car door to go look at what the item was. There, sitting on the front seat, was a basket filled with all delicious and deluxe snacks that would have been three months' worth of her salary. Not only that, but her car was detailed. The outside and inside looked brand new, like when she first brought it from the dealership, and it smelt like wet soil on a rainy day, quite soothing. With a smile, she inhaled the earthy aroma and looked down at the basket in her hand. There was a card stuck to the side, and she took it off and read it. The note was from Alpha Maximillian, who apologized for what happened and that he handled the situation. He also extended an invitation to the girls to lunch with him at the pack house.

As if! Carmeta thought as she walked back into the house with the gift basket in hand. Placing the basket on the counter, she threw the note away, having no intentions of ruining her birthday weekend celebration with another overbearing alpha male. She already lived the last 20 years of her life with four older, overprotective, overbearing, alpha brothers and a military strict, alpha father. If it wasn't for her mother having to quite literally threaten her father and brothers, after she begged for the weekend, she would be stuck at home celebrating with them, an accurate definition of a pity party. Now she was at a beautiful cottage-style Airbnb with her friends and far from her "protectors". Wolf Creed Pack was the only place her father was going to let her go because according to everybody in the wolf nation, it was the safest place to be. That is exactly why if she ever wanted to seek freedom again, before she was mated, she and her friends were going to keep their lips sealed on the events that occurred during this trip. No, it was best if she just ignored the Alpha's invitation.

After having three healthy gulps of her coffee, Carmeta attempted to make a breakfast of fried eggs, bacon, and toast at noon and placed everything on the dining room table after she made five different place settings. Her head still pounded out of control, but at least nothing burned. As she placed the last of the food on the table, Maya, literally, came dragging herself out of the room with a yawn. She looked positively dreadful with makeup still clinging for dear life on her face, the dress from last night a crumbling mess at her waist, and her hair looking like Angelica's Barbie doll.

"Who gave you a gift basket?" she asked, rubbing the last of the sleepiness from her eyes.

"Alpha Max, of course."

"Wait, he was here? Why didn't you invite him in?" Melody asked as she walked out behind Maya. Unlike Maya, she showered and was looking well put together.

"No, it was in the front seat of the car."

"That's it?" Maya asked in disbelief. Not for one second believing that this was all the hospitality that the Wolf Creed Pack had to offer, not after what happened this morning.

"Nope, there was a note," Carmeta replied vaguely while she poured herself a second cup of coffee before heading to the dining table.

"And?" Both Maya and Melody asked.

"And what? Aren't you guys going to eat? Where's Harmony? Maya, please, at least go wash your face before you come to the table."

"Carmeta, don't start. Where's the note?"

"What note?" Harmony asked as she came strolling out of the bedroom and heading straight for the dining table.

"Car got a note from Alpha Max and is keeping it hush-hush."

Carmeta looked guiltily at the trash then averted her eyes as all three girls stared pointedly at her. It wasn't that she was scared of them. Out of all of them, she was the youngest and the one with the Alpha trait. No, that wasn't it, she just knew that for the entire trip they would nag her to no end until she got annoyed and told them. With that slip of her eyes, Maya, who knew her so well, dove for the trash that contained the infamous note. After reading it out loud, all three girls sang yes like they were in a church choir.

"No! The last thing I need is another overbearing alpha male telling me what to do. Suppose we go there and then he insists we stay for our duration. What fun will that be? We'll be practically walking on eggshells, considering that he is not our alpha, and he's got a nasty reputation for dealing with disobedient wolves. I'll be damned if I have to bend my will against another alpha male."

"But this is Alpha McHottie here. Not many outsiders get to go into the heart of their territory, much less say that they were invited by him to have lunch. Come on Car..."

"Maya, no. I can't, not this time. It's my birthday weekend and I just want to let loose without having a male breathing down my neck. Please, just do this for me."

With a plea, Maya and the others agreed. They enjoyed their breakfast together, laughing about the mischiefs they all got into as children. Carmeta was glad they all agreed to just ignore the alpha's invitation and enjoy their time together.
