Chapter CHAPTER 139
Marcus
POV
My wolf roared in vindication.
"I knew it!" I snarled, my eyes narrowing dangerously. "I knew you were hiding something, Lily. You think you can keep secrets from the Alpha?"
Lily quaked under my intimidating presence, her eyes wide and filled with fear. She stammered, "I...I didn't-" but I cut her off with a harsh growl.
"Enough!, I should have known the moment you started giving me all those petty words of wisdom that you were up to no good. This whole place reeks of your secrets and lies, you're wasting my time Lily, I've no time to banter words with you right now, tell me what I need to know, else we'd have serious issues!" I fumed, my words spitting with anger.
Lily shrank back, her thin frame seeming to fold in on itself. Her eyes darted from side to side, searching for an escape route, but there was none.
Lily sniffled, wiping away a stray tear as she gathered her composure. "Marcus, you have to understand. This isn't entirely my fault. If anyone is to blame for Chloe's disappearance, it's you, stop trying to make this my fault, I am only doing my best to be a good friend here."
"Good friend? A good friend would not lie when it's obvious her best friend is in trouble, and whatever marital issues Chloe and I have is none of your business. we would settle it amicably like adults and you've no right to interfere. Learn to respect boundaries and stop speaking out of point!" I said, my chest heaving uncontrollably.
She was slowly pushing me over the edge and if care is not taken, I'll lose my self control.
Lily scoffed as her voice shook with anger, no longer hiding her bitterness. "Chloe would never have left if it wasn't for your own infidelity, Marcus!" She jabbed her finger in my direction.
"She might have been able to handle all other embarrassments, but definitely not the fact that you had a child all these while when she thought she was going to bear your heir, do you know how that feels? You're centuries older than her, yet you act less mature, you're the cause of your marital crisis not me, I am simply being a best friend!"
I stood rooted to the spot, stunned by Lily's outburst.
"Your constant embarrassment pushed her over the edge, do you know what it feels like to be in Chloe's shoes? All the women in the pack hate her because of you, do you know what she goes through in the closet, all you're concerned about is saying words that hold no water, you claim you love her but you cannot create a balance between your past and present!" Lily continued, her voice dripping with venom.
I stood there, frozen, as Lily's words sank in. Guilt washed over me, but my desperation to find Chloe overrode everything else.
"Are you saying she ran away because of me?" I asked, my voice barely audible. "We were talking about it, next thing she started choking, I went to get water and then she was nowhere to be found, this is not my fault! I didn't even remember Lizzie existed!"
"Can you just listen to yourself, a woman you spent years with, you tossed her aside like thrash. What guarantee is there that you aren't going to do the same to Chloe. She couldn't take it anymore. She needed to get away, to think, to clear her head." Lily's eyes narrowed, the anger giving way to more tears.
Lily sniffed a sadistic smile curving her lips. "Please Marcus, for the sake of your pack and unborn child, believe me, she is fine wherever she is and I assure you, I wouldn't stop pleading on your behalf, just let her be."
I swallowed hard, my throat dry and tight. "I can't," I whispered, but I wasn't even convinced of my own words.
"Oh, really?" Lily challenged, her voice venomous.
"Yes Lily, Chloe can't stay away from me because of a simple mistake. we always sort out issues, this shouldn't be any different. I am bringing my wife back home today, give me her current address!"
"Forgive me Marcus but you're shameless. If you had a bit of self control, do you think we'd be in this mess, do you think Chloe would have run off if she felt loved and appreciated?" Lily's voice was like acid, burning away any shred of self defense I might have had.
I clenched my teeth, anger and guilt eating into me. My veins throbbed with rage as my vision tinged red and my wolf surged forward.
At this point, I was beyond reason, lost in a haze of fury and hurt, my lips curled into a snarl as I pounced on Lily, my fangs bared and ready to rip her throat out.
"Marcus please! I've a child in me!" Lily screamed as she tried to push me off but my heart was torn between my love for my missing mate and the blind rage that threatened to consume me.
Before Lily could react, my claws tore through the air, ripping into her flesh. She cried out in pain, staggering back as blood oozed from the deep gnashes.
Lily's blood spilled onto the floor, creating a crimson pool that mirrored the violence in the room. She gasped for breath, her eyes fluttering as she teetered on the brink of unconsciousness. But her cries of pain were drowned out by the enraged shout of a new voice. "Lily!"
Mark burst through the door, his eyes wide with shock and horror. "What have you done?" he roared at me, as I stood heaving, his voice vibrating with fury.
I froze, as I looked at Lily on the floor, my feral instincts receding as the shock of my actions set in.
"Lily!" Marcus screamed, cradling his wife in his arms. "Lily, please! Stay with me!"
But Lily's eyes were closed, her chest still. The light had faded from her face, her skin deathly pale.
I stood over them, the realization of what he had done sinking in with every second that passed.
