Chapter 42
My hand seeks David's. We enter the crowded kitchen and watch my mum explore cupboards seeking something particular. My cheeks flush as I see David scanning the kitchen. He turns to me and kisses my forehead, sensing my edgy look. His warm breath touching my face and temple, making my eyelids flutter shut, recalls me. I nod in agreement. Neme jumps up and makes a triumphant shout, interrupting my positive thoughts.
David's deadpan face makes me chuckle..
Behind David, a sneeze Out of David's arms, I scream. My father only sees David. He ignores my mother and me.
I'm so worried that if Dad continues gazing at David, the wolf may see it as a threat. David is unflinching. He stands solid, arms at his sides
"You?" Dad eventually asks, albeit seeming apologetic.
I sigh. Overprotective guys, I suppose.
"He's David, my brother-in-law replies.
His fists clench at his sides, hoping his eyes don't flare orange. I grab for his nearest hand, and we entangle our fingers.
"Would you want a pizza?" Mom asks from the kitchen.
We all look at her. Dad smirks and looks at me.
My father no longer questions David.
Dad interjects. His brows are wrinkled. "I know you said you'd go tourist, how is that, it's quite long."
"It's fun. Experiencing new places and people is fun.."
David grins at my response, knowing I'm not lying. But Dad's face changes. My response surprises, if not delight him.
Mom sighs in admiration. "That's terrific, Susan. You've always been stuck at work." She goes to fry the bacon.
"Thanks, Mom," I say.
The remainder of the day is spent with inquiries, snacks, and beverages. No one remarked on the embarrassing sleeping arrangement when my former bedroom was exhibited. I'm changing out of my pants and sweater and into more comfy clothing.
What could they possibly be talking about? Everything is conceivable.
My bedroom door opens, and David enters as I'm untying my hair from the ponytails. My golden hair cascades down my back.
David takes my chin and tilts my head back to view him in his eyes.
Am I in love with David? I want to ask all these things, but I don't have the chance to because I'm being kissed, and my body betrays me and kisses David back.
Screw you, body, for being such a damn weak link and falling into the ecstasy of kissing David.
For supper, Mom slips two frozen meals onto the burner. We eat cherry and drink water and beer in the living room while chatting and watching TV.

The fireplace below the mounted TV provides a peaceful ambiance for our chats and gives a natural light to all our faces. I end up nestled in David' arms as we all finish our pizzas and drinks, and the dishes have been emptied into the sink. "So, you're just going to be staying tonight?" Mom is cuddled up on the sofa with a quilted blanket drawn up to her shoulders.
David and I are seated on the living room floor in front of the fireplace. "Yeah." I admit, cautiously.
"Because I'm missing my husband," Neme says while stuffing potato chips into her mouth.
Mom glares at her.
"I have work soon," David explains, and I flash him a pleased glance when they aren't staring at us but are instead taking sips of the beverages they kept. David squeezes my hips. Mom takes a sip of a drink. "What precisely is your work, David? I never had the opportunity to inquire until today."
Dad, who hasn't stopped observing David, shakes his head in agreement with Mom's inquiry. I inwardly groan. This falsehood is going to seem dishonest. Mom and Dad will realize what's up, ask additional questions, and finally, the truth will escape through our lips!
"I own-well. It's been handed down-a a little unknown hotel company in the Mountains. It's getting dilapidated, but your daughter has assisted me with renovations that'll bring in more people." I look up at David; a sense of relief floods me. "Really?" Dad yells, his gray eyes widening and his lips parted in an o shape. "How is your revenue?"
Mom jerks her head and glares at Dad, and I hiss, "Dad, stop."
But David quickly answers all questions. He stares directly into my parents' eyes when he speaks to them. And, if I disregard my parents' presence and focus on our "hotel business", I have to confess that David is getting me on. He's in total control of the situation, and his earlier mentioned uneasiness has vanished. David seems composed.

"Every holiday and birthday. I got Neme, which is probably why we're so close."
His lips in the crook of my neck create a shock that strikes me in all the right places. "Cute," he mumbles, inhaling my hair's smell.
I grin and chuckle. David pecks my neck rapidly before retracting his face. My parents watch us-Mom smiles at us, and Dad stares at David.
Dad rises. "I'm off." He says. Dad kisses me goodbye and nods at David. "Then I'll meet you tomorrow?"
David, who is comfortable with me lying on his chest, starts rubbing soothing circles on my waist without saying anything.
"No, Mom. Like this before." I groan in frustration.
"I know you and David will last. Your father knows, and I believe it's hard for him to understand that you'll turn to David instead of him when you need help. Give your father time, he'll be back to normal.." Mom bids us goodnight. She exits the room, leaving David and me alone.
We're quiet for a while, lost in our thoughts. I attempted to take in what Mom said. Not ready to let me go, Dad. And he'll have to learn to accept it. I shut my eyes and pressed my face against David's.
The sound of the fire and the heat it produces make me feel drowsy. I could fall asleep on the living room floor, next to David. But I'm too exhausted to sleep, so I snuggle closer. "Sorry about my dad. He's not normally-" I jump out of David's arms.
David softly seizes my face and draws me close. "Susan, you have nothing to regret. Just how my father would have acted had my mother married him while still living. " He stares me down. "I understand your father's point of view, and I'm not leaving."
