Chapter Mate
For some reason the visuals that I put on the last chapter didn't show up. I'm going to try to put them on again as their own chapter but if they don't work then I'm going to have to give up. If you really want to see them this story is also on wattpad under the same username with the visuals so feel free to go check that out.
As I pull into the driveway I look at the clock on the stereo and see that it’s almost ten. My mom’s car is in the driveway and the lights in the house are on. Slowly and with great effort I get out of my car, wiping tears off my face as I go. The door opens with a soft creak as I ungracefully stumble into the house throwing my jacket on the hook on my way in. “ Alexis May Grace Hathaway get your ass in here right now!” My mom’s voice booms. I wince at her tone and slowly turn the corner to find that my mother is not alone. Two large men are seated on the couch across from her staring up at me with wonder and confusion. The larger of the two looks pissed when he sees me and I swear I hear him growl. Ignoring them like I do everything else right now I look up at my mom. Her eyes go wide and she stands taking a few steps towards me. “ Oh Lexi what happened?” She asks, noticing my puffy, red eyes and teary face. Instead of answering I bolt up the stairs. Mom calls after me but one sound in particular fills my ears and that’s the soft whine like a puppy who just got their toy taken away.
Roman-
As the door opens and the daughter of the woman in front of me comes into view after being yelled at by her mother my woft goes crazy. I fight to keep in control but seeing that she - my mate- had been crying set me and my wolf off again. When she bolted up the stairs I nearly lost it again and even let a small whine escape me. My beta Maxon puts his hand on my shoulder telling me not to go after her. I fight all my instinct and emotions that all tell me to scoop her up and never let her feel the pain she’s feeling again. “ Alpha?” Maxon asks through our mind link. “ What’s wrong?”
“ Mate.” I growl back. He goes quiet and I know he’s finally feeling the connection to her as his Luna. Heather, my mate’s mother, sits back down on the couch and smiles at us but it’s clear to see her mind is elsewhere as is mine.
“ As I was saying, my ex husband has no contact with me or Lexi. After he found out I was pregnant he left. Never heard from him again. So I’m not sure how much help I’ll be in finding him.”
“ He left because you were pregnant?” I ask, pushing the anger aside as best as I can.
“ That’s what I gathered, yes.” Heather eyes us suspiciously. “ Look, Lexi doesn’t know the first thing about her father but she’s incapable of hating anyone. Please, if he’s in some sort of trouble, don’t tell her. I can bear her losing the only faith she has in him. Even if he deserves it.”
“ He’s not in any trouble ma’am. We’d just really like to find our friend.” Maxon tells her for me since I’m still in a state of shock from finding my mate.
“ Would you mind if I met your daughter?” I blurt out suddenly. Heather looks at me with a strange curiosity in her eyes. “ She just looked so upset when she came in. I wanted to know if there was anything I could do.” I add quickly. A small smile forms on Heather’s lips.
“ She’s your mate isn’t she.”
Lexi-
As hard as I tried I couldn’t get that whine out of my head. It stuck with me and for some reason made me even sadder when I already was. The memory of Sam’s face when I drove away hits me like a ton of bricks and I find myself crying all over again. The beautiful girl next to him with barely any clothing on, clearly giving him what I never would. Because I’m stupid. Because I’m the goody good in the school who everyone copies off of. Because I’m easy to use. I always knew it was too good to be true but I was never able to stop myself from going to him again and again. A strange tingling feeling courses through me and I find myself gravitating towards my bedroom door. Then there’s a knock and I practically tear the door off the wall to open it. My breath hitches in my throat when I see who’s on the other side. The man from down stairs stands before me with a small smile playing on his delicious looking lips. His raven hair looks so soft I just want to run my hands through it and his green eyes have me mesmerized. “ I’m sorry for bothering you but I saw that you were quite upset and wanted to know If you were okay.” His lousiouse voice breaks me from my trance.
“ N-No i’m alright. Thank you.” He smiles and nods but there’s disappointment in his eyes. “ C-could you get my mom for me though?”
“ Of course. Anything else.” He asks. You? I want to say but don’t. I shake my head and he walks away after giving me another sad smile. My body tells me to go after him and jump in his arms but my mind (at least part of it) reminds me that I don’t know him. So instead I just sit on my bed and wait for my mom. She walks in without a thought and throws her arms around me. The tears start again and before I can stop them I’m crying into her shoulder. She holds me the entire time, rubbing soothing circles around my back.
“ H-he cheated on me.” I whisper to her.
“ Sam?!” She asks in horror. I nod still clinging to her. “ Oh honey I always knew he was a no good boy. He was never the one for you sweetheart. He doesn’t deserve your tears.” I pull away and look at her.
“ I- I don’t know how to handle this. I felt broken in the car on the way home but as soon as I stepped into the house I felt a little better. Still hurt but not as weak and broken. Does that make any sense?” I ask. Mom smiles and nods.
“ It makes perfect sense, baby girl.”
“ What does that mean though?”
“ It has something to do with your father.” She tells me. I give her a confused look.
“ What about him?” She hesitates for a moment.
“ I think you and I should go down stairs. There’s someone I’d like you to meet.” She grabs my hand and pulls me out of my room and down the stairs. The two men are still down there on the couch talking together in hushed voices. When my feet touch the floor the guy who came up to my room before looks up and smiles when he sees me. The man next to him also smiles but it’s not nearly as bright as the first ones. His smile could light up the entire world. Mom drags me the rest of the way to the living room and makes me sit right across from the man. “ Lexi, I’d like you to meet Roman and Maxon. They were friends of your father.” She tells me.
“ They don’t look old enough to know him though?” I ask, eyeing them both a little more closely. Roman, the better looking of the two in my opinion and younger looking, has the muscles of a model and looks of a college boy. Maxon looks closer but there’s something older and wiser about him. Almost like he went back in time and hasn’t aged since.
“ Our parents were friends with him, not us. But we met him a few times.” Roman tells me and something inside me flutters with excitement at his voice.
“ But why are you here? I’ve never even met my father.” I tell him.
“ Well it’s not exactly him as much as it’s you.” Maxon tells me.
“ What about me?” I ask warily. Roman takes my hand almost instinctively. Sparks fill my hand and travel throughout my body before I pull yank from him. He looks disappointed but says nothing.
“ Your father is a very important person. Making you just as important.” Maxon pauses and looks at my mother who nods as if to tell him to go on. “ So important that your life could be at risk.” The world stops for a moment but I shake my head clear and listen carefully. “ That’s why we need you to come with us. You’ll be much safer there.”
“What do you mean? Why am I in danger in the first place?“ I ask, leaning forward.
“You never mentioned that on the phone.” Mom says, a little panicked. They both look at each other for a moment before Mason digs out his wallet and pulls out a picture. He hands it to me wordlessly. I gasp when I see the man they’ve shown me. He has the same blond hair and blue eyes as me, the same soft caring look in his eye and the same features. I hand the picture to my mom and stand up.
“I don’t know what you’re trying to get out of showing me a picture of my father but I want you out of my house!” I yell. Mom gasps and pulls me back down next to her.
“Lexi! That is no way to treat people. I know that’s not you speaking honey. You’re hurting and that feeling scares you. I understand, but taking it out on these boys will do you nothing. They’re just trying to help you.” She tells me. I look at both of them, studying everything I can about their faces.
“Tell me what you want. Why am I in danger?” I ask finally. Roman smiles softly then turns serious.
“This goes back to your fathers family history.” He starts.
“They weren’t like people today. They were...different.” Maxon adds.
“Your great great grandfather was chief of the moon tribe and a very good one. His pack thrived and was the biggest pack in America.” I cut Roman off.
“What do you mean pack?“ I ask. He looks at my mother.
“She doesn’t know, does she.” He accuses. Mom shakes her head. Roman looks back at me. “Lexi, you’re like your ancestors.”
“I’m different?” I laugh sarcastically. He nods.
“Actually you’re like me and Maxon. You’re a…werewolf.”
