Chapter 39-Roman
There’s a second of awkward silence as Amara exits the room. I refrain from letting out a sigh, trying to maintain my mask of indifference. I know she’s going to try and forget her problems by sleeping, but we have to face this head on. I’ll talk to her. Hopefully Sophie will help too. I don’t really know what to say to make it better, my mate she may be but I still have a lot to learn about her.
“Forgive her, she’s overwhelmed easily by all this, as I’m sure you can imagine” I tell Thayer
“Of course. It would certainly be a shock to me if I woke up one day and found out all this information. I’ll have one of my men transport my books to you as soon as I arrive home. We will be leaving later tonight so expect them tomorrow morning.” Thayer says, getting out of his seat.
I simply nod as he lets himself out, finally allowing that heavy sigh out. We have quite a long road ahead of us it seems. I look at Cici, Violet, and Serena who are all looking at me expectantly, so I fill them in, including my own secret as well. By the end, not even Violet is able to mask her shock. Again, there’s a few moments of silence while they digest everything.
“Well, at least we seem to be heading in the right direction. If it comes to outright war, the Fae being on our side is a huge advantage, and hopefully there’s something in those books to help the Luna.” Violet says finally
“What we need is her father. I was hoping he’d be here shortly after her powers unlocked. I don’t know how to help her, I can only help her with her demon side. I know nothing of angel training, and frankly, I don’t even know if her magic will present the same way. The powers we’ve tapped into, they’re similar to mine, although a little stronger, but there’s too much we don’t know. At this point, if we’re going to train her, which it sounds like we need to do ASAP, our only hope at not going in blind is her father.” I say
“He will come brother, he’s got an entire underworld kingdom to get under control before he leaves. We will do whatever it is we have to do, but I believe he will come. He didn’t go to all that trouble just to say ‘eh fuck it’ and abandon her. I think the more pressing issue here is getting Luna to accept it. Is she ok?” Aston says
“She’s having a hard time with it. I tried to feel her emotions today to see where she’s at with it, but all I got was anger and despair. I think she was in a rough enough place before this all came to light, but then this just shattered her.”
“What did she say about it when you guys were at mom’s house?” Violet asks me
“We didn’t really talk about it, outside of occasionally training her demon powers I didn’t even bring it up. I just wanted her to have a break.”
“You idiot! You had all that time, and you didn’t talk about it?! No wonder she made no progress since I last saw her. I knew something was wrong, I knew it. She was completely shut down, and I just watched her shut down again. She needs to talk, not avoid. Fucking men. This is why I’m gay!” Violet yells at me
I guess she’s right, I just wanted her to enjoy our week off, I didn’t really think about anything other than making her forget…fuck I am an idiot.
‘You’re just as new to this as I am. I didn’t think of it either. It’s not an unfixable mistake. We’ll just have her talk about it to us now.’ Adonis says in my head.
Fair enough, I guess. I’m suddenly even more grateful Sophie was able to come. I’ll go up to her room with her, see how she gets Amara out of her slumps. I know it was her who got Amara out of the initial slump. I’ll just have to take notes. Yes, that’ll work.
“I had her friend from her previous pack come up here today, she’s on her way now. They’ve been friends since they were pups. She’ll be able to help” I say, and Violet scoffs
“She needs her mate to help her too. Don’t you remember how inconsolable you were when mom died? Neither of us could help you. You fought that darkness alone, and you haven’t been the same since. I haven’t seen you happy until Amara came around. Mates help heal each other, you can’t-”
“Violet, I know! I’m not pushing it off to her friend, I’m simply saying I’ll observe how she does it. Amara and I are still new mates, same as you and your mate. I have shit to learn about her yet!” I snap at her and she purses her lips. I look to the other girls in the room, who have been quiet and not said a peep since they came in. Cici looks back at me and swallows before speaking
“I don’t know Amara well, but she’s strong. I know that much. If there’s anyone worthy of this title it’s her. She came here, and just started turning into the person she always wanted to be. This got dropped on her before she could even accomplish that. Be firm with her, push her. She’s not weak, this just overwhelmed her, she probably doesn’t understand it, and that’s even more frustrating for her. Don’t let her keep escaping the situation.” she finally says
I nodded, and dismissed them. I can already feel the makings of a headache coming on. Seriously, I’ve been home less than two hours and I already need a drink. I decide to let Amara cool off and dive into some paperwork, but I’m not even 15 minutes in when I receive word that Sophie is here. I walk out to the front of the packhouse to meet her. When I get outside, I see her walking up to the packhouse entrance and she beams at me.
“So you’re the terrifying legendary Alpha Roman? You don’t look so scary in person. Well, maybe that’s just because of all the stories Amara told me about you.” she says sizing me up. Well, she’s certainly not shy. I raise a brow at her
“You’re just as spunky as Amara described you as. Come. Amara is upstairs sleeping. She’s a little …-” I start to say before she chimes in
“Ah, she always sleeps when she’s in a mood. Show me where she is, is she expecting me?”
“No, I wanted to keep it a surprise.” I say flatly, and I lead her upstairs to our room.
The entire way she does all the talking, by Selene this woman can talk. Even if I wanted to respond, I wouldn’t have been able to get more than a few words in. She comments on the packhouse, her and Amara’s childhood, asks where Amara’s cat is but doesn’t give me a chance to answer before she’s commenting on the training session she can see through the window. It takes me less than 5 minutes to walk her to our room, but I feel like I’ve just had an hour’s worth of conversation that I didn’t even get to participate in. Her and Violet will definitely get along
“Here’s our room.” I say as I open the door. She doesn’t waste a second before she runs in, yelling
“Wake up grumpy pants!” and I hear Amara groan.
I know I said I’d hang out with them, but I have to get away from the energizer bunny before my head explodes. I shut the door, and walk back down to my office, deciding to get some paperwork done before I take over on the next round of training.
