Chapter 80
Chapter 80 Fixed on Her
When he spoke, his voice was barely audible.
Leah heard him speak but couldn't quite catch his words, so she asked with a hint of confusion, "What did you say?"
Maurie lowered his head, hiding the flicker of affection in his expression that he almost showed. He then couldn't help but awkwardly replied, "It... It was nothing."
Understanding that he might not want to share, Leah didn't press further. "Let's eat then."
"Alright." Maurie looked up again. Any unrestrained emotions he had shown earlier were now well hidden.
He said, "We've been chatting for so long, and I haven't asked you yet. Where have you been these past three years? Why haven't I heard anything about you in any of our social circles?" The truth was he had asked many people and searched many places, but there was no news of Leah.
Back then, Maurie had felt a deep sense of despair and even lost himself for a while.
However, just as he believed that his secret crush from high school would remain unrequited, Leah unexpectedly re-entered his life.
It made Maurie feel as if he had stumbled upon a precious treasure again, leaving him shocked and delighted.
This time, he was determined not to let go of her.
Regardless of the outcome, he would give it his all.
Leah was taken aback upon hearing Maurie's words.
Thinking back to the three years she spent married to Quentin, her life revolved solely around Quentin and his family.
She had lost her sense of self because of that.
She had no social life, and even her closest friends were out of touch. It was clear how much she had sacrificed for Quentin.
It was clear how much she had sacrificed for Quentin.
Thinking about all this, Leah didn't feel a hint of sadness, only regret and a sense of injustice.
She bitterly thought, "Why did I allow myself to be so compromised for a man? I am truly a failure!"
Seeing Leah's cheerful demeanor fade and her smile disappear, Maurie gently said, "I'm sorry, I was just worried about you. If you don't want to talk about it, you don't have to. Don't force yourself."
Shaking off her thoughts, Leah gave
Maurie a forced, wry smile. "It's not a
big deal. just aimlessly went through those three years, wasting so much time. I don't even know what was doing now that I'm looking back at it."
Seeing her strained expression, Maurie felt a bang of heartache. "Since it's already in the past, let's not dwel on it then. We should always look forward, right? To me, you've always been a beacon of warmth, lighting up those around you with your kindness."
He remembered the first time he met Leah. She was rescuing an injured kitten from a corner of a wall.
Despite her clean school uniform, she didn't hesitate to pick up the dirty, injured kitten and take it to a rescue shelter.
At that time, Maurie couldn't help but wonder how there could be someone so beautiful and kind in the world.
He initially thought it was just a facade Leah put on and that she couldn't put up the act for long.
However, that wasn't the case. Leah continued to surprise him with her countless acts of kindness.
She had helped an elderly lady with a walking disability to cross the road, assisted a visually impaired elderly man in selling watermelons, and even reunited a lost child with their parents when they couldn't find their way home...
These acts, one after another, were witnessed firsthand by Maurie.
Gradually, he found himself drawn to this warm-hearted girl.
Before Maurie knew it, throughout their entire three years of high school until now, his heart had always been fixed on her, never wavering...
