Chapter In Regret Novel 139
Chapter 123
Morpheus's voice softened, almost pleading. "Please, Shirley, we have nowhere else to turn. You're our only hope."
I opened my mouth to reply when headlights swept over the driveway, and the low purr of an
engine signaled the arrival of someone else. A familiar someone.
Lorik stepped out of his car, his presence immediately commanding attention. He walked toward me with that confident stride that always made me feel both safe and slightly wary. His expression
softened when he saw me, but there was an underlying tension in his movements.
"What brings you here tonight?" I asked, forcing a casual tone. "Don't you have a meeting early
tomorrow? Shouldn't you be resting?"
Lorik smiled, leaning down to press a kiss to my lips. "I missed you," he said simply, as if that explained everything. I raised an eyebrow, amused but slightly perplexed. We had parted ways at the ball not long ago, and yet here he was again. His possessiveness, though comforting in some ways, was becoming increasingly difficult to manage.
As he straightened up, his gaze shifted to the group standing awkwardly by the door. My adoptive family's expressions darkened, though they tried to mask their discomfort. Alice looked particularly tense, as if she were afraid Lorik had overheard her earlier outburst. Lorik's eyes narrowed slightly. "That's not the face you all showed me when Shirley and I were first- married," he said, his voice calm but laced with underlying threat.
Shakira's face went pale, and Morpheus swallowed hard, clearly unsure how to respond. They had once played the role of the perfect adoptive parents in front of Lorik, pretending to be a loving and supportive family, all while whispering behind my back.
Alice, especially, had worked to turn Lorik against me back then, feeding him lies that nearly ruined our relationship. But now, with their fortunes reversed, they didn't dare show their true colors.
"I... we..." Shakira stammered, but Lorik wasn't interested in their excuses.
"Do you remember those days?" he asked, turning to me. His voice had softened slightly, as if trying
to draw me into his side, but there was still a dangerous edge to it. "They acted like they cared about you, like they were your family. But we both know the truth."
I nodded, remembering all too well the façade they had put up, the lies and manipulations that had come between us. Now, though, the power dynamics had shifted, and they no longer had the upper After I Let Go My Alpha, He Knelt in Regret

hand.
Morpheus finally found his voice, though it trembled. "We've made mistakes... we know that. But we're asking for your forgiveness, for your help. Just one more time."
I felt a tug of sympathy, despite everything they had done. There was a time when I would have done anything for them, even emptied my bank account to keep them afloat. But things were different now. I was different now.
Before I could respond, Shakira broke down completely. She fell to her knees, grabbing my hand with tear-filled eyes. "Please, Shirley. If you help us, I'll tell you something about your real mother. A secret you've never known."
froze. The offer hung in the air like a heavy cloud, and for a moment, I couldn't breathe. The words,
so casually spoken by Shakira, clung to the corners of my mind, sinking into the depths of my thoughts. My foster mother's revelation was something I had always suspected but never wanted to confront.
I let her speak.
"Your mother, Matira," Shakira began, her voice cracking as if the truth weighed on her too heavily.
"She was the one meant to inherit the Ghost Pack. But when she fell in love with a human..."
My heart sank. I already knew where this was going.
"...when she fell in love with Ethan, she was removed from the tribe. They eloped, and she lost everything-her title, her pack, her home. Eventually, hunters came after her."
I swallowed hard, the name of my mother, Matira, reverberating in my mind. "What happened to
her?" I asked, the word 'And?' hovering on my lips, too terrified to complete the thought.
Shakira's eyes brimmed with tears. "She fostered you with me, knowing she couldn't protect you anymore. She was desperate, and when the hunters closed in, she vanished." Shakira sobbed, covering her face with her trembling hands. "She lost track of herself... she lost track of you."
The knot in my throat tightened. "I knew all of this," I whispered, my voice barely audible. "But then
what?"
Shakira looked at me through tear-streaked eyes. "She came back, Shirley. A year later, she came back for you, but by then, she was a rogue. She was no longer allowed near the pack."
I staggered backward. "What?"

She sent gifts, hoping to ensure your well-being, even if from afar."
My body shuddered-
In other words, not only did my mother not pass away, but she had been watching me grow up all
these years?
She doesn't know what I've suffered in Ghostpack, and still keeps sending money into the pack, hoping that I'll have a better life?
