Chapter Let’s see what you’ve got Tuesday 11th July 2017 morning
Gabriel pedalled his way to the care home. He was grateful to Barney for the loan of the bike. He’d given it a bit of a clean-up ... a bit of oil on the gears, re-tensioned the brake cables. It was a pretty good bike.
A police car came up behind him. It put on its blue flashing lights, and Gabriel pulled in nearer the pavement to give it room to get past. It pulled in front of him, then veered in, forcing him to stop. A policeman and a policewoman got out of the car.
The policeman walked slowly over to him.
“What have we got here then?” the policeman said.
Gabriel thought that the policewoman was looking slightly embarrassed.
“Fair belting along, weren’t you, lad?” he continued.
“I don’t think ...,” Gabriel said.
“No ... seemingly not,” the policeman said. “You don’t think, do you?”
The policewoman was leaning over into the passenger side of the police car. She had picked up the radio and was speaking to someone on it.
“Can I help ...?” Gabriel said.
“I think it’s you that’s going to be needing the help, lad,” the policeman said. “Now, can you kindly open up that rucksack ... let’s see what you’ve got, eh?”
