Chapter Prologue
Vernon O’Brien thought about Alice in Wonderland as he surveyed the scene then muttered to himself, “Hmmm, things just seem to be getting curiouser and curiouser.”
After weeks of weighing up the situation, pondering about the positives and negatives, fretting about turning his back on time honoured vampire rules and principles, finally, when he decided that money in his pocket was more important than the life of a single vampire, he stumbles on to this; a curiouser and curiouser situation.
She of the Mohawk had been picked up in a car, and O’Brien had identified that the three other occupants of the car were from her clan, and the car was followed by another car that had four occupants from that same clan. No big deal there, sure, although he had followed the two cars out to the Vampire Academy in Abita Springs, and a few surprises cropped up. Eyes were on the vehicles as they drove through the National Forest, and as they got closer to the Academy, O’Brien sensed more eyes; eyes in the trees, watching and observing.
O’Brien didn’t dare get out of the car, because the eyes seemed to be everywhere, although from a safe distance, he watched her, She of the Mohawk, drive into the estate.
The Hammers, all of them, congregating at the Academy again, and the thought popped into his mind, Why… A celebration? A formal occasion?
O’Brien gazed at the trees, everything still, everything silent, although he could sense that they were there. Another question popped into his mind, Who … who are they?
O’Brien started his car, comfortable with the fact that he knew where She was, although something didn’t seem right. Something might be brewing, because the eyes in the trees were everywhere, creatures in the trees everywhere. Having a cautious look around, his senses tingled, the hairs on the back of his neck bristled, and his survival instincts flared as it settled in O’Brien’s mind quickly; something was going to happen.
Maybe he would cruise by tomorrow evening and see if She was still here, because big money, Huge money was on offer, and yeah, sorry Vampiric values and principles, but when it came down to a decision of respecting the Vampire Code, or else grabbing the money, the Capitalist side of his nature had won the day. Giving up a single vampire wasn’t going to cause the Vampire Empire to crumble. Yeah, so sorry Taylee Baby, but ya see, I got me some plans, and the suitcase full of money is going to help those plans come to fruition, and yeah, sorry too, because I don’t think this Vampire Hunter likes you… He knew that She of the Mohawk wasn’t just a vampire, she was a Warrior Vampire, and tales of her fighting ability were already legendary. His decision had been made though; he would capture Her and turn her over, although with all his senses dancing erratically, the Big thought popped into his mind. Do I get a chance to capture her?
O’Brien turned the car around and headed back.
