Chapter 11
The table shattered into a thousand pieces as it shattered against the wall, with Luke absentmindedly watching the destruction. He was furious, the animal inside him taking over. He had been so close to finally having the girl, but once again, the vampire had shown up to save her. He did not care how he knew where she was, only that it was the second time he was bested. Her ankle had been in his grip, pulling her to him. Luke could almost taste her succulent flesh between his teeth when the pain had burst in his back. Black spots had sprouted his vision, and as he looked down, a gaping hole in his chest with his heart splayed before his eyes. Using his senses, he smelled the vampire behind him, and before he could act, the bloodied hand holding his heart disappeared back into him, only to leave again through his back. His body didn't listen to his mind, and against his wishes, it crumbled to the floor. The last thing he had seen was the girl falling with him, her soft body landing on top of him.
Luke let out a roar at the memory. The few glass windows in the abandoned building rattled from the force. Another surge of anger rushed at him, so he reached for the chair. Gripping the legs, he continuously smashed it against the ground, each hit eliciting another scream from him. Only two small stumps lay in his hand, a million pieces of wood scattered around him. Dropping them to the ground, he balled his fist as his nails sharpened, piercing his skin. The pain was light, but the need to tear a body in half even greater. Scanning the room for something else to tear to pieces, his gaze landed on the bag. He had found it outside when he had woken up after searching for them, but they were long gone. Rushing forward, he grabbed it, ready to destroy it, but suddenly stopped when the perfumed smell of flowers wafted up. The bag rattled as he brought it to his face, pressing his nose in as far as it could go and taking a deep breath. Her scent covered everything, and smelling her made him calm down a bit. He stood there for minutes, his eyes closed, just taking a deep breath one after the other.
You failed again.
The hated voice returned. Still with a tight grip on the bag, Luke dropped it to his side, turning around the empty room, searching for the bright orb to appear. Spinning twice around and not seeing anything, he thought it must be in his head. Luke was wrong.
Why are you ignoring me?
"I am not," Luke replied.
Then answer me
"I do not know what happened."
Luke slowly lowered the bag to the ground. It is valuable, the scent could lead to her, and he did not want to destroy it. Pacing up and down, he thought about how to reply, but it wasn't easy. He never had a way with words, only death his language.
She escaped again
"The vampire had shown up again. I had her in my grasp, but he sneaked up on me, tearing my heart out." Luke turned his hands to stare at them, His own blood on his skin, the wounds already healed.
Did you not wonder how you survived that?
"I...I... don't know. It has never happened before." Luke's previous victims were not even close in strength compared to his, and so he had never been injured before: until now.
I brought you back. You may have failed me twice, but I do see the potential.
Luke angrily shot his head up, looking at nothing. "You mean you were there. Why did you not step in and help? If you can bring me back from death, a simple vampire should be easy to kill." A sharp pain burst at the back of his head, becoming so unbearable it brought him to his knees.
I do not have to answer to you.
The voice is louder than before. Luke grabbed his ears, trying to block it out, but it was useless. The voice came from within, and nothing could stop it. Between the searing pain, he whispered, "I am sorry." Satisfied with the response, the voice stopped, and Luke was back to normal.
Lately, you think you can question me, but remember, I created you, and I can easily just uncreate you.
Luke's chest dropped and rose hastily as he drew deep breaths, trying to curb his anew anger. He would bite his time until the voice manifested itself before him. Unfortunately, he cannot kill something he could not see, but a body of light was physical and that he could kill.
Besides, she can sense when I appear and thus follow me. The less she knows of my plan, the better.
Slowly rising from his position, Luke stretched his muscles, secretly scanning the room again, but the voice was right. He was not here. "She?" he questioned.
No one important.
Luke was curious now. The voice pretended to be a God, untouchable, but he was scared of a female. Laughing internally, Luke kept his face neutral as he basked in the feeling. Not even he feared something, yet the one who thought he could control Luke fears something. Bending down to pick up the bag, he held it up in the air as if to show it off. "I have a bag. Her scent is everywhere and would allow me to track her better."
Good. But know, this is your last chance. Do remember I want the vampire alive. You may hurt him, but he better be alive.
As fast as the voice had appeared, it vanished. Luke could tell since the soft buzz in his ears, which indicated when the voice was present, disappeared. He should be angry now, but the knowledge of an enemy of his enemy gave him satisfaction. She was a ghost to him, but Luke pledged to discover more about her. But first, he needed to find the girl and the vampire. Find them and kill them.
