A Secret Alpha Mate

Chapter 45

I immediately look over at Abigail whose eyes are as wide as the doctor's. She goes to stand up holding her heart and

stumbles back. Dr. Lockheart ii there in an instant to catch her, they look into each other's eyes not breaking contact for

almost a minute.

“I guess this is my cue,” I say, they didn't hear me as I slipped out of the room, not sure where to go. I still had my checku

0 1 decided to sit in the waiting room. As soon as I find a seat the clinic door is slammed open making me jump.

I overhear Jennifer's voice at the front desk, I turn away hoping she won't notice me, even though I'm only a few feet awa

“You don't have an appointment, dear” The nurse says,

“I want to make sure this baby is healthy. The Alpha's baby is healthy. The nurse pauses for a second, but I don't dare loc

This was like a knife to the f****g heart.

“I can see if we can squeeze you in’ I hear some ruffling of papers, “What exactly do you want to have checked?” She asks

“I just want to make sure that the baby is growing as healthy as possible. I know that Alpha Jackson would agree.”

“Weren't you just here a few days ago?” I hear more ruffling as she checks the papers again.

Abigail and Dr. Lockheart emerge, both looking flustered but with huge smiles plastered on their faces. Abigail sees me ar

comes to sit by my side sitting between me and Jennifer, blocking me from her view as the doctors head to the front desk

“Is there something wrong, Jennifer?” I hear him say, Abigail rolls her eyes, I know she must have overheard the first part

Jennifer's request and put two and two together.

“Just routine checkup for the Alpha baby.” Abigail takes my hand.

“You're not scheduled for a few days, there won't be anything more to see than the last time you were here” He pauses,

“Just a few days ago.’

“Pleasee.” She whines, Abigail rolls her eyes again and I fight back a laugh, I'm so glad she’s here, “I just want to get some

more pictures.”

“This is a clinic, not a photo booth." The Doctor says, “Come back during your scheduled appointment or if there is a

problem.”

“The Alpha will hear about this."

“About you wasting pack resources? I will notify him.” He assures her and Abigail's smile is huge. She turns away in a huff

and slams the door behind her. Thankfully, she didn’t notice me, this time.

How much longer could I go without running into her?

“Ym sorry about the interruption, Miss Isla. On both Jennifers, and mine and Abigail's behalf” I squeeze Abigail's hand.

“No trouble at all, I'm sorry for interrupting you.”

“If I remember correctly, I was supposed to be giving you a check-up.” I nod at him. He helps Abigail up not letting go of h

hand. She looked at him with such affection, I was so happy for her, finally finding a mate she had long given up on his

existence. My heart was bursting.

I wonder if that's how I looked at Jackson. The clenching feeling returned, damnit. I was happy for Abigail and I would foc

on that. On her finding her mate and being mated to a doctor? She deserved it all.

The check-up was over in no time. Dr. Lockhart, or Jim, as he insisted that I called him, said that I seemed good as new. H

wanted me to continue with my daily walks and monitor my fluid intake and Abigail agreed on my behalf. She seemed

reluctant to leave him.

“It's a stormy day I was going to grab a cup of tea and read the entire afternoon. Why don't you spend some time with ea

other?” I say to them, but Abigail directly.

“ am off after my next appointment.” Doctor, I mean Jim, no that sounds weird, Dr. Lockheart, looked at Abigail not letting

g0 of her hand.

“That sounds lovely."

“How about you walk Miss Isla to the library and head back down here? Then we can get to know each other. I'l make you

dinner” Abigail immediately looked worried and scrunched her eyebrows looking at me.

“Ill be fine, I promise. I'll binge-watch some movies tonight if I can figure out the theater” I laugh a bit, it doesn’t sound

convincing though, “Don’t keep her out too late” I joke, but I actually mean it, I needed her.

She smiles back at him and walks me out, “Don't worry, I'll have so much to talk to you about. Sleepover in my room?” Sh

whispers. Relief washes over me, I wasn't losing her just yet.

“Yes, please,’ I answer honestly.

I head up to my secret library alone. I promised Abigial that I would show her another day but I wanted her to have time

herself to have dinner with her mate. She reluctantly left me and went back to her room but there was a bounce in her st

I've never seen before.

My library would be one of the things I missed most. Rain slashed against the windows, and I saw a roaring fire was lit in

the fireplace. It was 50 cozy and the perfect spot to try to lose myself in a book or two this afternoon.

Footsteps approach behind me and I wheel around on the spot, Jackson said not many people knew about this room.

The scent of pine and cloves washed over me and I see Jackson's worried face. Breathing in his scent immediately calmec

me and I reveled in it, even knowing it would make the absence later that much harder.

“I just wanted to set some books aside I thought you might like” He motions to a table by the fire, “I promise I'm not

stalking you." He smiles sheepishly, “But I had to admit I kinda wished you would show up here.”

I give him a sad smile.

“Do you mind if I show you the books? Then I'll leave you alone I promise.” I nodded, “I know you don’t want to talk abou

this probably, but I did have a meeting with my parents and Jen's. I told them I wouldn't give up on you as my mate and

I'm trying to see if there is a way around that whole Luna-mother-of-your-child-bullshit.” He rolls his eyes.

I let myself feel hope for just a second before I forced myself back to reality. Nothing has changed, he would have to

choose me or his title, and his pack needs him. I could never be his official mate if the baby was his. I couldn't stay here i

the shadows.

“When is the test?” I ask.

“She has an appointment early next week to see how far along she really is, and then when she’s two months we can get

done. So hopefully no more than a month?” I sigh, I don't know if I could wait that long, these past few days have been

hard enough.

“I promise you that it's going to be a thorough test, I'm having Dr. Lockheart takes care of it and get it sent away to an

outside lab for verification.” I nod, verification that the child in Jennifer’s body is his. Something I would never get with hi

“The Doctor said that he would watch the test and stay in his office that night to make sure it wouldn't be tampered with,

not that I think anyone would but just precautions, you know. The benefit of having a pack Doctor that's not mated is he

can pull these weird shifts and doesn't upset anyone.”

“Actually,” I smiled genuinely for the first time since we started this conversation.

Yes?"

“He does have a mate now." Jackson pauses shock and confusion plastered across his gorgeous features.

“How is that possible? He's seen everyone in this pack being the doctor” He thinks it over, “Wait, are you saying?”

I nod my head, a huge smile breaks across his face that I can't help but mimic.

“That is such great news, two wonderful people mated to each other, and finally finding each other after so many years."

His happiness is contagious, and it warms my heart that he is so happy for Abigail.

“He has an amazing cottage too, it's the largest one we have and so close to the packhouse just in case he gets called in,

Abigail will love it” My smile falters, I didn't think about the fact that she would be staying at this pack, and I probably

wouldn't.

I would lose her too, but it would be to her mate so I could live with that.

“What is that?” Jackson asks, I noticed that I had my pendant in my fingers, I guess I was absentmindedly playing with it.

“Oh, Abigail said that she found it on me when my parents died, she kept it safe for me and was going to give it to me on

my birthday."

“May 17” He moves to touch it and I nod his proximity to me making me dizzy. He holds the small pendant in his large har

the back of his fingers touching my chest, goosebumps erupt where his fingers brush and my breath catches in my mouth

I forgot how intoxicating it was to be this close to him. He turns it over in his hand and traces the outline of it a few times

lingering, but I don't stop him. I missed this feeling.

“It's beautiful” He murmurs, “Do you think it has something to do with your family?”

“I'm not sure, my parents were rogues.’

“But they came from somewhere probably, not many people are rogues their entire lives. Maybe this links back to the pac

that they were from, it looks like a family symbol. We have one too” He lets go of the pendant and the absence of his war

fingers makes me suddenly cold.

“I think we have a book here on them, if not it's not downstairs. You might have seen our symbol in my office, ours is of a

wolf with a mountain in the background and a moonstone in place of the moon. It was created by our ancestors when the

first claimed the land, sort of a flag” He explains.

He goes looking through the extensive shelves of books for a few minutes, I watch his movements wanting to remember

every second spent with him. His movements, the way he talks, so that if I did have to let him go I wouldn't forget him

completely.

“It's not here, I'll 1 bring it back to you when I find it, if that's okay?” His voice shakes me from my thoughts.

“I don't mind” I was elated at the thought of seeing him again, and also maybe finding something out about my family.

“Here's a book on the pack’s history, if you're interested.” He shrugs, “There's a lot about Silver Moon in there too since o

histories are so entwined.”

He hands me an old leather book with a golden picture of a moon on the cover. He heads out, turning around to give me

final smile. I take the book and sit down next to the fireplace and start reading.

At the beginning of our people, when wolves and humans became one, there was only one pack. As ranks started to be

established and Alpha wolves emerged, it became harder to live as one pack in peace.

violence broke out and alliances were formed. Eventually, the moon goddess decided to let them break free, every group

could scour the earth for a place to call home.

Some ran for years before finding a spot, some chose areas near the original pack, some never settled down.

There was a frenzy as everyone was let go, everyone wanted the best lands for their people, wolves without an alliance

were desperately trying to decide who to ally with and the Alpha’s were desperate to grow their numbers.

Everyone scattered, taken in by the frenzy, desperate to find the best lands for their descendants, willing to fight over it.

Eventually, every wolf found their group, their pack, all except one. A small injured wolf, that would have been a liability

and every pack passed her by, except for one Alpha, Alpha Amos.

Alpha Amos asked the injured wolf to join his pack, he didn't want any wolf to be left behind. The wolf showed him to a

secret place deep in the forest that no one else could find hidden behind dense trees that blocked out all sunlight even

the brightest of days, the forest eventually opened up to a huge clearing that overlooked a lake so wide the moon lookec

like it rose from its depths.

The Alpha went back to get his pack and claim this place as his. When the pack got to their new lands the injured wolf

revealed herself as the Moon Goddess herself. She bestowed these blessed parklands to the Alpha that saved her.

itis said that the moon goddess used to walk amongst them from time to time. The pack was favored by the moon godde

and as long as the line to the Alpha Amos never broke the pack would continue to be blessed and live in prosperity.
