A Secret Alpha Mate

Chapter 26

See I told you this isn’t so bad ~ Adrastea chides

You're right, I honestly can't remember the last time I felt this rejuvenated. I feel alive out here being connected to the forest.

It's only the second day of being a rogue, I hated that word. It's my second day of being pack-less and my fears have started to diminish. I've gotten rest, found a stream to refill my water bottles, and even found some berries with the help Adrastea. I feel great but I wonder how long this can continue.

Eventually, I would have to shift to hunt because that's something I wouldn't be comfortable doing in human form, but there was no rush on that yet, I'm sure I could find more food to hold me over for a while.

I was planning on wandering around for a bit and then maybe finding a small pack I could join, one that would be gratefu for an extra pair of hands. A fresh start, but I didn't feel any pressure to do that just yet. All I've known was long working hours and little freedom or time to myself. I didn't want to rush back to omega life of early mornings and late nights, and no time off. I realized that this was the only time I've been alone, and I loved it.

I've never been so cold before. The rain is lashing even though I thought today was clear. There is an emptiness in my che that is so heavy it is physically weighing on me. The coldness I feel is on the inside too, and that has nothing to do with t freezing rain or the wind.

I smell blood, something is telling me not to look down, I can't face what I would see before me, but the scent of blood is overpowering even in the rain.

I curl into a ball in fear, waiting for whatever took them to take me as well. start to lose consciousness, “Ah there you are little one” A voice says that sends chills down my spine, I try to open my heavy eyes but something hits me on the back o the head and I feel fresh blood, my blood, trickle down my neck. At least it was warm.

All at once, I'm alone again.

I float in and out of consciousness as I hear other voices yelling that they found someone still alive. A light flashes across my eyes, and then disappears. I'm carried and end up somewhere warm. I'm confused and mentally exhausted as I drift into the abyss.

I wake up clutching at the hole in my chest trying to catch my breath but the only breaths I can take are shallow.

That was interesting. It's okay, Isla, I'm here with you. I'm watching over you and protecting you, it was just a bad dream - Adrastea soothes me.

it's a while until I can fall back asleep, the cold feeling doesn't leave me and I wrap myself up tighter in the thin blanket packed. I finally drift back to sleep as the first light of dawn makes its way down through the trees.

I can't shake the feeling that someone is watching me.

“Trigger warning- s****{ assault*

I wake up later than I ever have, I see the sun already shining down through the thick canopy and it dances between leav I stretch, and wake up lazily for the first time in my life and smile to myself.

What's on the agenda for today? - I ask Adrastea.

Anything and everything you'd like

This is nice, it's easy to forget the terrors of the night when the forest is so calm and beautiful during the day.

I re-pack my bag and wander around looking for breakfast following a stream’ lazy flow, humming to myself embracing t bit of sunshine on my face.

I feel the hair on the back of Adrastea’s neck stand up.

I can't help the feeling that someone is still watching me, but I don't see anyone.

I'm probably just be getting paranoid being on my own for the first time ever and my wolf is mirroring my fear.

I hear a crack of the branches and a scent overwhelmed my senses like nothing I've smelled before. It was putrid, rotten, and stung my nose. I was frozen in place, my feet glued to the spot, I dared a small peek over my shoulder and I saw a gangly man, with long stringy hair, I knew he must have been a rogue even though I've never encountered one since I got Silver Moon.

Run

I turn to force my feet to go, even though they feel like lead. I take a few steps when something knocks the wind out of m and I'm forced to the ground. I see another man step out from behind a tree in front of me, this one is wider, but someho still gangly. He's holding a long bat-looking stick which is probably what winded me.

I can’t catch my breath, I try to focus on breathing so that I can figure out a way out. There are a few more rogues that I se from the corner of my eye. I try to count them, four or five, I am severely outnumbered.

“Going away so fast? You just got here” The first guy I saw comes up and stands in front of me flashing his yellow teeth. “ haven't seen a woman around here in ages, and we're starting to get lonely. You don’t want us getting lonely would you?” shudder. “Help her stand boys, where are your manners?”

Two men come and grab my arms forcing me to stand, they don't drop my arms after I'm standing, I know that I would ha bruises where their fingers dug into me tomorrow, that is if I survive until tomorrow.

“Now you are a pretty thing aren't you?” The man that I assume to be the leader, the only one that's been talking comes and says in my face. He reaches down to grab my chin and force me to stare into his face, his breath is awful and I jerk an instinctually.

“Feisty one this is” They all laugh, “Since 'm the one that found her, it's my tur with her first" There are a few groans fro the rest of them, “Gentleman, I'm willing to share." That elicits a few cheers.

I don't know how to get out of this ~ Adrastea sounds afraid

What do we do? Can we shift?

I don't think so, it might take too long since it's our first time and they can shift even faster. Maybe we can-

We get cut off by another blow to the ribs, I hear a crack and a yell out in pain. They all laugh again.

“No talking to your wolf missy, no one is going to help you out. It would be better for you if you just take it like the little w*+*e you are. On your knees. Now.” The big one next to him smiles and takes out his bat and hits me hard in the knees, fall hard and the two men that were holding me let me go. He hits me again in the head. I feel a trickle of blood and my vision is getting cloudy.

“Hey hey, no touching her face, I want to keep it intact.” The leader scolds. My clothes start getting ripped off me and I he a low growl.

“I said, she is mine first. No one is to touch her unless I need help holding her down.”

“Who made you in charge, anyway?" The bigger one retorts.

“Yeah, why do you always get first. We just want to look at her before you ruin her”

“Yeah, come on, just a peek.”

They continue to argue and I feel sick, my stomach is churning and I'm fighting to regain consciousness, my breath finally coming back to me.

Now is our only chance

They keep fighting and I don't make a move, waiting for the perfect moment, I don’t want them to know that I am coherer I see the big one start to push one of the others that were standing next to me and they all start yelling and fighting each other.

I don't think twice and shove myself off the ground and don't think about the pain of my knees, or my ribs, as I run as fas as I can, as my life depends on it, because it very well does.

The adrenaline helps me push through and I almost don't feel the sharp pain in my ribs. Almost. I don’t know how long I have run for but I can’t stop. I don't stop.

All of a sudden I see someone out of the corner of my eye racing in front of me. They caught up, they're outrunning me. I can't do this anymore. I tried as best as I could. I just hoped I would be unconscious for what came next.

I check to see where they are and I can't find them again, I lose my careful footing and trip over a rock, or something, I don't know anymore.

Hitting my head on the forest floor I drift into a welcomed abyss.
