Chapter 23
The idea of a battle was very much a sell-out nowadays.
When we thought of a fight we imagined scenarios like in the movies, like in Lord of the Rings, or series like Game of Thrones.
Where two great armies meet, prepare, and collide against each other, unleashing death.
But the harsh reality is that a war has no order, no beginning or end, no head or tail.
You didn't know where an enemy ended and an ally began.
You didn't realise whether the blood on your hands was from your own wounds or those you had caused.
But if you ask me how it all began, I could answer that it began when the light began to fade. When the sun's rays no long fully illuminated the sky, instead the darkness of the night let out the monsters that lurked in hiding.
It was at that moment that the massacre began.
And for the first few minutes I really thought we would win.
But the hours showed me how wrong I was.
For every vampire we killed, two more took their place.
And where one of us fell, he never got up again.
I checked the mind link again and again to make sure Noel was still alive, and again and again I was relieved to find that I was.
A sharp pain in my back made me grunt, and in discomfort I dropped backwards, crushing the vampire on top of me. I spt quickly and my fangs found his head, in one swift movement I ripped it from his body, and before it hit the ground, I was surrounded by three other bloodsuckers all attacking me at the same time.
Kicks.
Claws.
Bites.
Scratches.
Blows.
Fangs.
I don't know how, but I ended up next to my Beta, fighting shoulder to shoulder. Protecting each other's backs as we had always done, where I neglected my defence he protected me and where he tired I attacked.
We were a whirlwind of blood and death.
And during those moments I felt hope.
Then I felt it, as the scales of battle tipped in his favour.
When a vampire, almost as old as time itself walked into the valley. He walked among the bodies as if the road was not covered in blood.
And when a wolf attacked him, he killed it so efficiently that he didn't even have to muss his hair.
I knew who it was right away.
Maurice.
The damn vampire who had killed my mate's first mate. Who had murdered his family. And everyone she'd ever known to erase her from history. The one who had hunted her for almost a millennium just to kill her. The one who would tear my entire pack apart to find her.
Our eyes met, his nose twitched as if sniffing the air, and with a sneer, he parted his lips and I could hear his voice.
“You stink at her rouge.
There was no doubt he was referring to me, though my brain didn't have time to delve into why I had Rae's scent on me when I hadn't seen her in days.
I growled at her, baring my teeth stained with the blood of her kind.
“If you want to fight me puppy, itll be fun for me to end your life and stick your head in a nice place where she can see it. My body lunged at him.
He dodged me by a few inches and his fingers caught my paw making me fall.
I spun as I fell and his other arm met my muzzle, but before I could wrench it away a kick to my chest made me let go. We both recovered and breathed before we attacked again.
My claws tore open the flesh of his right leg, while his fangs dug close to my throat. With a yelp of pain I struggled to thro him away, and ran to ram him with my head.
Anticipating the move he grabbed me by my fur and leapt on top of me. His embrace squeezed my throat and the air stopped rushing into my body. I jerked like crazy hoping his grip would loosen. But he didn’t budge an inch.
It was when the moon was at its highest point that I thought about it.
How had it come to this moment?
And as I tried to remember what had happened in the hours before the battle.
My heart began to beat slower and slower and my gaze began to be plagued by coloured dots.
The goddess Selene would witness my death, hopefully she would forgive me my sins of the last years thanks to my actio of the last hours...
(.That same day in the morning...
I hadn't been able to sleep for more than a couple of hours, I had pronounced dark circles under my eyes, but Noel didn’ utter a word, not when he had identical ones on his face.
In my dining room Mrs Bridget had prepared breakfast, but for the first time since Noel had gone to live with Lissa, there were three sets of plates and cutlery instead of one.
The three of us ate breakfast in silence, broken only to compliment my wonderful cook on her delicious French toast and freshly chopped fruit.
Well, enough of this nonsense.
Lissa rudely slammed her cutlery down on the plate.
-What nonsense, love?
Noel asked impassively as he sipped his coffee. Lissa gave him a dismal look.
“This is probably the last breakfast we'll all have together and you two do nothing but withdraw into yourselves.
This isn't going to be our last breakfast together.
Noel declared, his voice hard. She snorted.
“Why don't we ask for help?
~You know why.
I replied, glancing meaningfully at the tattoo on her wrist.
-1 don't mean the other packs, you could talk to Caliope, see if she knows anything.
I'm not going to involve her in this, she risked too much the first time she got involved in wolf matters.
Alpha, maybe....
“No, and that's my last word.
I scolded my Beta.
-What about Silver Moon?
My body tensed with the question.
“What about that pack?
“Why aren't they here, I mean, at the end of the day it's if you blame them for attacking us, besides being unprotected, w could ask for their help.
No one in my pack except Noel knew that Rae was my mate, and I wanted to keep it that way, otherwise I wouldn't know how to explain to everyone that I had another mate, and that she had exiled us from the others, because I had fought wit her Beta.
That would be an option if only we knew where they were, they disappeared just like the snow at the beginning of spring I wasn't surprised they were nowhere to be found, not for nothing in all the centuries they had existed they had never be attacked.
Well then...
My fist slammed against the table.
-Every option that comes to mind has already been thought of, every possible plan has already been laid out, so I recommend that you leave the strategising to us and enjoy the company of your companion while he’s still at your side. And with that, I get up suddenly, not willing to sit idle for another second, and rush out of the dining room.
I hear behind me a chair being pushed back followed by footsteps behind me.
For a second I think it's Noel coming to scold me for how I spoke to his partner, but my surprise is great when Lissa’s han grabs my arm tightly and pulls it.
It wasn't your fault.
My face reveals nothing, as I have no idea what she's talking about.
It wasn't your fault Ana died.
Every muscle in my body tenses and I pull away from her as if I've been burned by the touch of her palm.
She made her own decisions, aware of what the consequences might be.
“Enough.
I blurt out in a broken voice.
She did it because she loved you more than anything in this world, and she wanted you to live, because she knew how much this pack needed a leader. How much it needed you.
Stop!
But Lissa steps closer, and drills me with the sincerity of her tear-filled eyes.
We still need you Alpha, so when you're out there, survive, win this fight, show those bloodsuckers why we were the strongest pack for so long. Make Silver Moon regret leaving us. But most of all, make Ana's sacrifice worth it.
My breath catches and my eyes close, my cheeks feel wet, and I don't remember when I started to cry.
I feel Lisa's lips press against my cheek, and then I hear her footsteps walking away.
Jason.
I open my eyes and look at her in the doorway of the dining room.
“I loved her too, we all did, she would have made a fantastic Luna, she would have wanted to see you happy.
Her lips give me a trembling smile before she turns and goes to sit on Noel's lap as they embrace.
My heart beats a mile a minute and my feet carry me out of the house.
I inhale and exhale trying to calm down, and slowly my mind stops being overwhelmed by memories of Ana and me and I start to focus on the present.
-Alpha, we need your help with the distribution of the warriors.
One of the pups informs me, I nod and force my body to follow.
She would have wanted to see you happy.
I'm going to kill all those damn vampires.
Especially the one that wants to hurt Rae.
I'm going to start living for Ana who can’t do it anymore.
And I'm going to do whatever it takes to make Rae forgive me, because we both deserve a happily ever after.
That's my goal, and I'm going to achieve it even if I die trying.
(.Back in the fight...
My eyes begin to close and my legs begin to give way.
When a deep howl sounds in the distance.
Causing Maurice to become distracted and I'm able to shake him off.
My chest rises and falls violently trying to catch my lost air.
But before my eyes can focus properly, the vampire rushes back to attack me.
Fangs out and arms outstretched, I knew he wouldn't react fast enough to get me out of the way.
But before he could deliver the killing blow.
A large white wolf charges him and sends him flying, his fangs are out and his murderous blue eyes challenge him with their gaze.
Aloud growl from him makes the earth tremble beneath us.
And perhaps because of the lack of oxygen my brain is slow to react to the image in front of me.
My body untransforms, leaving me as a human on my knees on the ground.
And my voice comes out hoarse from the damage to my throat when I manage to pronounce his name.
“Logan?
But the wolf shows no sign of recognising me.
Concentrating on the predator that is standing a few feet away from us.
My eyes scan around, watching as wolves I recognise as Silver Moon warriors emerge from all around and join the battle. Another warning grow brings his attention back to the vampire who has already recovered from the blow of the now Delt of Rae's pack.
A wry smile appears on his face revealing his teeth.
-Nice to see you again mutt, tell me, are you still licking your mistress's paws or have you finally decided to get rid of her leash?
Logan barks furiously and his claws come out of his paws but he doesn’t move from his spot.
My mind is going a mile a minute trying to figure out what was going on.
Logan is here.
Silver Moon's wolves are here.
That means she's here.
And as if summoned by my mind Rae's black she-wolf comes running up to us.
She gives me a short glance before looking at Maurice and baring her fangs.
My heart leapt in my chest.
She is here.
She didn't just let us die.
She didn't let me die.
Maybe it's not too late for her to forgive me.
I shake my head, there will be time for these thoughts.
First we have to tear this fucker apart.
