Chapter ~ 16 ~

My heart pounded as I went down each individual step, the cold air wrapping around me like a blanket. Tapping on the hardwood at each step, the echo bouncing off the cold cement walls.

Please don’t be down here please don’t be down here. I thought as I reached the last step, the light scanning the closest wall, before panning around the small basement revealing the boxes and old furniture.

β€œThank God,” I said to myself as I lowered my phone, the light shining off the cement as I looked down.

Relieved and confused I slowly made my way back up the stairs eager to leave the basement and never go back down.

Where the hell did that guy go? It’s not like he could have poof out of thin air… Could he? I thought confused as I made my way back to my room ignoring the uncomfortable feeling that welled up inside me.

β€œJust go to bed Zaphira maybe you’re just imagining all this, your just stressed there so much going on that now you’re imagining things… Well, I have to go to therapy now.” I told myself as I flung myself back on the bed ignoring where my phone had fallen.

I could feel the warmth of the blanket heating up as I snuggled closer and to my pillow, the strange feeling of feeling light again as I tried to grip tightly onto the blankets and pillows hoping I would not disappear.

The rumbling sound of a waterfall pounded in the darkness, my body feeling cold as I shivered. How can I be cold I was under a blanket I know I didn’t plug in the air conditioner? I thought as I tried to find my blanket when something tickled my leg.

I squealed as I jumped back onto my knees looking around the darkness for whatever touched me.

What the hell! … That’s starting to become a very common word for me these days. I thought as I searched the ground for my phone hoping to shine some light on my leg.

β€œOh no, what’s going on now? Please don’t tell me this is grass I’m touching. I glanced up at a huge moon looming over me as it slowly moved over to where I was sitting, bringing light to my surroundings just barely.

Oh no, please don’t tell me I’m here again in thatβ€” mom! If I’m here then… Maybe I can find that woman again… The one that looked so much like mom. I thought my heart sinking as I thought of her.

I rose to my feet looking around for where I fell last. Okay Zaphira, even though this is another dream and so was the last time you clearly having a very vivid dream so… Were not going to jump off cliffs again.

I told myself as I walked the edges of the tree line hoping to find that dirt path.

β€œThere it is,” I said as they leaned down the cliff and the dirt road, I created last time still embedded in the earth. To see the small village lit up like before, little light shining outside of the houses guiding the villagers to their homes in the darkness.

In the distance, I could see a dark little mountain with strange-looking arms that stretched out to the ground. What’s that? I wonder as I thought of how I could get down without hurting myself again.

Just then a familiar sound began to play in the distance, the familiar music I heard last time. β€œIt’s the woman! It has to be.” I said to myself more eager to get down than before.

Maybe these will help, they look sturdy. I thought as I studied the rocks in front of me their smooth surface looking dry and sturdy. If I just take my time, I should be able to get down without many injuries.

Excited I didn’t wait for any more thoughts or consideration, I slowly stepped onto the rocks, a cool breeze whooshing past me as I nervously put my weight on the rock.

That’s it just a little bit slower, not too fast now. I thought to myself as I crouched down sticking my left foot out for the next rock below it.

I held my breath as I made my dissent nervous at each step I made, nervous I glanced up to check my progress, like before I was too far down to chicken out but not close enough to the solid ground.

As I put my foot on the next rock my foot slipped as the rock moved down slightly more, small rocks around it tumbled down sending my heart into panic mode as I rock.

β€œI’m too young to die… Why does this dream have it out for me?” I gripped the rocks with my palm fearfully as I struggled to keep my grip.

After a fearful attempt, I successfully caught my balance, continuing my descent down the mountain.

Yes! Yes, thank the heavens.” I said practically in tears as I hugged the dirt ground. I can’t believe I survived, take that PE! I just did reverse rock-climbing that calls for an A+ in my books. I thought as I rose to my feet.

I almost forgot why I struggled so hard to get down the god-forsaken mountain when I heard the sounds of the song, the woman’s voice much clearer than before.

Quickly I followed the voice, the woman the same woman from last time stood on top of the hill by the tree again singing to the moon in her harmonic voice.

I watched as the woman put her hand out to the moon as if she was reaching out to touch something as she sang the lyrics.

She looks so much like mom, her long brown hair the harmonic voice even her pale complexion… At least if mom was wearing medieval closing. I thought as I sat listening to her waiting for the right moment to talk to her.

The woman finally finished her song, her attention still focused on the moon when she started to weep, her cries echoing around the small opened space as she crumpled to her knees.

β€œAre you okay miss?” I asked as I walked up to her, the smell of lavender filling the air, the woman turned to me her eyes widening again like before she quickly got to her feet.

β€œWait!” I called out just before she could take off. β€œI just want to talk to you I said as I kept my hands out in front of myself as if keeping my hands up were keeping her in place.

β€œIt’s just…” I began as I quickly thought of something to say to her that wouldn’t make me seem crazy. β€œYou look like my mother and…”

The woman looked at me sympathetically as she turned to me a sad smile on her face.

β€œYou look familiar too,” The woman said finally her voice sounding just like mom’s, I had to fight hard not to cry. β€œYou look a lot like my daughter… If she was older that is, she had the same colour hair and the same-colored eyes.” The woman said with a sad tone.

β€œI’m sorry,” I said sincerely as I felt guilty. β€œYou look so much like my mom she has the same eyes as well she was also a really good singer like you… It’s uncanny on how you look so much like her.” I said as I looked away at the ground.

I could feel the woman’s armrest on my shoulder, I glanced at her as she gave me a weak smile. β€œIt’s okay, it looks like we both got confused.” The woman said as she rose to her feet.

I nodded as I slowly stood up feeling slightly better than before.

β€œMay I ask what was your mother’s name?” The woman asked.

β€œMira, Mira Xian.”

The woman looked surprised almost fascinated by the name as she looked at me. I guess my mom’s name is not common in this world… I thought confused as I looked around at the small village.

What is this world? Have I read any fantasy books lately? I thought as I tried to think back it the books I’ve read.

β€œWhat about your daughter? What was her name?” I finally asked as I remembered I was still talking to the woman.

The woman looked down, her eyes shading over as she looked like she was going to pass out. β€œI don’t know, I don’t remember her name it’s been so long.” The woman said heartbroken as she struggled to remember her daughter’s name.

β€œI got into an accident shortly after my daughter… Passed away and I haven’t been able to remember her, not her name and not her sweet voice, all I can remember is a vague description of what she looked like.” The woman said before looking at me with sad eyes.

β€œI’m very sorry, I couldn’t imagine how painful that would be… losing any memories about her except for her voice and the vague description of her appearance,” I said feeling better knowing that I still had the memories of mom and how she was like.

β€œWhat is your name child? It’s really late where do you live?” The woman asked as she observed me her eyes shifting as she looked at my clothes.

I guess to her my clothes would seem weird since they don’t exactly have these types of fabrics or clothing style here. I thought as the woman raised an eyebrow suspiciously.

β€œI’m not from here, I got lost a while ago and… I haven’t exactly been able to get back home.” I said hoping that she would buy my lie.

The woman looked at me hesitantly as if she was trying to see through me as if she knew I was lying.

Her eyes glanced down at the ground before glancing at my hand her eyes fixed on my ring on my finger.

β€œThat’s a …. pretty ring what kind is it?” The woman asked.

β€œOh, my mom gave it to me for my birthday,” I said as I glanced at my ring

The galaxy colors swimming around the rock.

β€œOh, wow it's pretty.” The woman said politely. Then glanced around as if she just remembered something.

β€œIt’s too dangerous for you to be out and about in the dark, God knows how many creatures lurk in the woods waiting to prey on anyone who ventures deeper,”

The woman said as she gestured for me to follow her. β€œYou should stay with me and my husband for the night, it will keep you safe from the wild and I can give you something sturdier to eat.” The woman suggested.

I nodded as I followed the woman into the small town and towards a small little cottage-looking house with a strong roof. So, the history books were right they made homes out of straw? I guess there are a few accuracies when reading a history book but I wouldn’t bet that the rest of it could be lies. I thought as I entered the small little house.
