Chapter TRYOUTS
Bella:
"Girl, I don't know what you were up to, but keep it up," Hazel said the moment I stepped into her room.
I looked around, noticing the room had been redecorated with a new bed just for me, and my bed was perfectly laid.
I knew she wouldn't hesitate to talk about what happened today, but I wasn't in the mood for that. Spending a day with Ryder felt weird, and although I couldn't easily let go of the fact he was a monster, I realized he had a heart.
"Don't you have extracurricular activities to attend?" I asked, and she shrugged.
"Yeah, I do, but luckily the computer club can't function without me," she said, placing her fists on her waist, which made me laugh.
I sat on my bed.
"So what's it gonna be? Will you join the club today?" She questioned, leaning in towards me with our faces touching. "I think I want to join the cheerleading squad," I pushed away her face.
Her face fell when I said this, but I was certain. I didn't want any more workload because I was already struggling with the extra credits I had to take.
"That breaks my heart, but I support your decision," she said with arms crossed. "Also, good luck with Fae, because I doubt she would let you in after what you have done so far, but I hope you crush her further," she said with a smile on her face.
She was proud of me, but a part of me was scared, because Fae tried to murder me once, and who knows what more she could do to me.
My belly rumbled, and she tossed me a bag of chips.
"Getting food out of the cafe is harder than you can imagine," she said, and I shrugged, digging in.
When I was done eating, Hazel and I changed into our uniform, which was basically a t-shirt with the school's logo on it and black shorts with stripes on the side. Then we left for the school building where the extracurricular activities were to take place.
"Be careful, and give me the deets later," Hazel said, walking away to her class while I walked to mine, which was at the end of the hallway.
When I got to the door, I took a huge breath. I looked to my right to see the twins and a couple of people in the room all geared up to fencing. They looked at me, and I ignored them, walking into the room in front of me, where utezneeridauers were ̃at.*
As I walked into the room, I saw a group of cheerleaders dressed in purple skirts and tank tops perfecting their moves while Fae stood at the center, commanding them.
She blew a whistle, causing the girls to break formation.
"You are almost there, but Tonia, you've got to keep up or you'll kiss the team goodbye! Lose some weight if you have to! I need you to be light!" She screamed. "As you were," she said, causing the girls to fall to the floor with labored breathing.
The room fell silent, causing me to clear my throat.
"I would like to register for the tryout, and I hope to become a cheerleader," I said, and Fae turned around with her brows creased.
The girls murmured as she walked towards me.
"Well, if it isn't Ms. Fae wannabe," she said, sizing me up, but I stood my ground. "You truly want to be me badly that you have sworn to take part in everything that I do, which includes my boyfriend," she sneered, and the girls in the room looked at me.
I took a deep breath.
"I do not know what you are talking about, and I do not care. I just want to be a cheerleader because that was what I did in my old school, and..."
"Then wow me," she said, cutting me short, and I raised the corner of my cheek.
"What?" I asked, and she walked over to a girl, taking her pom-poms.
"I said, wow me," she placed it on my chest and walked to a chair in the center of the room where she sat.
I took a deep breath and began my routine. I started with high kicks, each one higher than the last, feeling the stretch in my muscles. Then I transitioned into back handsprings, my body flipping over and over with a rhythm that felt as natural as breathing. But it was the finale that I was most proud of. I sprinted across the gym, then launched myself into a full-twisting layout. I could feel the air rush past me as I spun, my body extended in a perfect line. When I landed, the gym fell silent, then erupted into applause. I looked over at Fae, who had her eyes widened and mouth ajar, but it slowly faded into a frown.
"Ta, ta, ta," she hushed the girls, who were clapping as she walked up to me. "You were close, but I can see that all that body weight is getting to you, and you cannot be a part of the cheerleading squad," she said, causing my jaw to
fall.
"Let me help you catch your mouth."
She attempted to touch me, and I slapped off her hands with my brows creased.
"You clearly are trying to get on my nerves, but I will not allow that. I know I performed excellently well, and I demand that : you put away your sentiments and allow me to be part of this team because I merited it," I said, and she chuckled with an eye roll.
"Oh, quit whining like a baby. Look around and tell me if anyone here is as bulky as you are. You are a size eight, and everyone here is a size six or four," she said, turning to face her friend Tonia. "Except Tonia, who is in between a six and eight, but then I would like to call her a seven, but you, you are probably tending to a ten, and we can't allow that here, can we?" She asked, and the girls shook their heads, chorusing a "no."
Merely looking at their faces, I could smell fear, and I knew just what I had to do.
"So, please, take your leave and close the door, which you forgot to do when you walked in," she said, and I shook my head.
"You are a bully, Fae, and I am not afraid of you. Look at these girls. You have pushed a good number of them into being anorexic, and I can swear they might be bulimic too. I'm perfectly normal and slim is okay. I do not need to be walking bones like you for me to join the cheerleading team," I said to her before facing the crowd of girls. "You do not need her to tell you what to eat or not. Look at you, a good number of you dress like her, eat like her, and speak like her. Stop letting her push you into an identity crisis. You can be yourself. Who's with me?" I asked, and the hall went silent for a while.
suddenly, a girl raised her hand.
"Of course, Chelsea, I knew you were a traitor and you are officially booted," she said, and then another girl raised her hand.
All the hands were up except for her friends, a. k. a Fae's fairies, Tonia and Pearl.
I watched Fae's face change, and then she looked at me.
"You think you can waltz in here and change my life? I fucking hated you, Bella, and this ends now."
"I challenge you to a game of fencing." Everyone gasped when she said this. "If you win, then you can join the stupid team and if you don't, then you'll swear off everywhere I walk through in this school. You'll be an outcast, and you cannot even eat in the cafeteria," she said, staring into my eyes.
With the reaction on their faces, I could tell she was a pro at this, but I couldn't back down. I was an alpha princess and, of course, I could wield swords.
"I accept your challenge, but let's make it better. If I win, I'll head the cheer squad, and you will be under my command," I said, holding my gaze.
The moment she flinched a bit, I knew she was scared, and a smirk formed on my face.
"Deal," she said...
