Charmaine adjusted her expression, nodding nonchalantly. "Yes, Mrs. Jenny understands the customs. She dressed up specially to pay respects to the late Mr. and Mrs. Cross."
A look of panic and nervousness flashed across Jenny's face.
Even though she was only a side branch of the Cross family, with Emyr and Kane being the only direct heirs left, there were no elder relatives of higher standing to supervise her. Jenny paid no heed to any of these so-called customs.
Kane was rarely around, and Emyr was seen as a weakling. Who would dare to reprimand her?
Yet here, out of nowhere, came this impudent girl daring to insult her publicly!
Before Jenny could explode, Hector, standing nearby, disdainfully questioned Charmaine, "This is the Cross Residence. Who gave you the right to speak here?"
Hector had been watching Charmaine keenly. His eyes flickered with astonishment.
The woman was youthful and radiant, with an elegant figure. She was a remarkable beauty by any standard in Eragos.

What a pity she was with a waste like Emyr; wasn't that a waste of beauty?
Straightening her back, Jenny lifted her chin arrogantly. "That's right. This is the Crosses' territory. Matters of our family are not for an outsider like you to comment on."
Feigning a heartbroken countenance, Jenny continued, "Of course, I know that one should wear black or white for memorials. But this house is drenched in sorrow, so I thought wearing something bright would make Emyr feel better. My considerate intentions were twisted by an outsider!"
A cold smile tugged at Charmaine's lips. This relative of the almighty Satan was truly something else...
Jenny, ignoring Tad, moved closer to Emyr. "Besides, I came over today with good news."
She proudly pulled Hector closer to her side. "Hector has earned a master's degree from Yasaria First Academy. He can now officially join the Cross Group and be your right-hand man!"
"Pfft!"
Charmaine couldn't hold back anymore and burst into a scornful laugh.
Jenny's expression darkened at once. Her heavily made-up face twisted with malice, and she pointed at Charmaine, scolding, "Who's this poor wretch? You're not even worthy of cleaning our shoes. What are you laughing at!"
Alfred spoke up just in time, with a hint of caution in his tone, "Mrs. Jenny, this is Ms. Charmaine Nelson." "What Charmaine? I don't... Wait... Did you say Nelson?"
Jenny's eyes widened in disbelief, staring at Charmaine as if seeing a ghost. "You're the woman the Crosses found outside, the one betrothed to Emyr?!"
Jenny had spent years trying to plant women around Emyr and Kane. Not only would this foster

However, Kane cycled through women faster than clothes, and Emyr had invoked an engagement with the Nelson family.
After the mix-up of children at the Nelsons, they had unknowingly raised someone else's child with utmost care, while their biological daughter was raised in the wild, becoming unruly and notorious. She had even eloped to South Aspus, likely tainted beyond repair!
The Nelsons themselves did not acknowledge her publicly, so Jenny assumed the engagement was null and void.
Yet here she was, moving in with Emyr!
What a shameless, desperate woman, willing to stoop so low for wealth and power, even to the point of seducing a cripple!
Jenny screamed in outrage, "No way! Emyr, how could you let someone like this become your wife!" Emyr's face remained devoid of emotion, his handsome features wearing a cold, deep-seated arrogance, brooking no dispute. "My fiancée does not need anyone's validation."
Charmaine dismissed Jenny's words entirely, but was rather surprised to see Emyr stand up for her. Previously, Emyr had not even bothered to argue with Jenny when she acted superior.
Charmaine's lips curved slightly as she spoke with indifference, "Parading your authority as an elder, using this memorial as an excuse to force your son with a practically useless master's degree into the talented Cross Group. At your age, where's your shame?"
Jenny's face turned ashen. "What did you say?'
Hector, like a

Charmaine, her face etched with cold sarcasm, retorted without missing a beat, "You idi*t! Even with your blessing, they couldn't squeeze that academy of yours onto the world's top university
